Youthful expression that creates rapport and enthusiasm to support Youth employment, especially women, girls and people with disabilities.
Origin: Ghana was previously under British imperial rule. British lords names that stood out were Charlie and Jack. The names became so popular amongst Ghanaians that they began to refer to strangers as Charlie/Jack, much like how Americans use “dude”. It expresses familiarity, camaraderie, or to get someone’s attention (in this case the Youth’s one, not to be applied to senior people).
Today: Charlie was transformed into “Charley” though Jack remained Jack.
Anyone at all can be Charley. Nowadays, it signifies Mate, Lad, Dude, Buddy, Bro, Man etc. Popular expressions containing “Chale” are:
Chale wotey: the word for Flip-flops, as 'Wote' in Ga means 'let's go.’ So my friend, let’s go.“Chale, make we go” meaning, “dude, let us go” “Wassup Chale!”
